Tips for journalists covering child welfare

What are some best practices for journalists interviewing youth, parents and others with lived experience in the “child welfare” system?

We asked Dylan Cohen to develop some resources as part of the Spotlight: Child Welfare project. Dylan is a former youth in care of Ashkenazi and Red River Metis descent, an organizer and urban planner.

Dylan asked youth and parents who’ve been interviewed by journalists to share ideas for best reporting practices. He also reviewed existing literature. Drawing on this collective wisdom — and his own often negative experiences with media — Dylan developed tip sheets (right). He also worked with producer Uytae Lee to produce a video (below). Let us know what you think.
